Deanna Palmieri

What companies/classes are you currently in?

I am currently a part of the Jazzcat competition company.

When did you start at Center Stage?

I started at Center Stage when I was 7.

Do you remember your first dance routine?

I don't remember my very first routine but I do remember my first competition dance routine. We danced to the song Time Warp from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I was extremely excited to perform this routine because we all had to be extremely big and animated. We all got to wear white wigs and our costumes matched the theme perfectly. Definitely a memorable first competition dance.

What was your Center Stage journey?

My journey at centerstage started with the summer intensive classes when I was 7. I then went on to take regular Jazz and ballet classes until I was in the third grade. In third grade I  auditioned to be in the Senior Cougars company. After that I took a little break from dance but returned in 7th grade as a Jazzcat. I've been a Jazzcat ever since.

Why has it been worth all of the energy you’ve put into it and the sacrifices you’ve made?

Dance has been my outlet for creativity and my method for relieving stress . It's where I found my confidence and ultimately found myself. Dance gives me a space to freely be myself without being judged. All of the sacrifices I've made and continue to make will always be worth it.

What other outside of school activities do you do?

I love to paint/draw in my free time.

Assuming that you were, what kept you sane through the first months of quarantine?

Definitely my mom. We leaned on each other through the first months of quarantine. It’s made me  have an even greater appreciation for her.

What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?

Cookie & Cream

What is the last TV show you binge-watched?

The last show I binge-watched was Jersey Shore and South Park at the same time.

If you could have any animal for a pet, what would it be?

I would make Gary the snail from Spongebob real and keep him as a pet.

What invention should exist but doesn’t…yet?

Women's pants that have actual pockets… Seriously, it's a struggle.

Who is your favorite Disney character?

Cruella De Vil. Love Love Love her hair first of all, so cool I would do it to my hair if I were allowed to.  Cruella’s got a major attitude and sas. Is she a villain? Absolutely! But you can't deny the girls got style and a very expensive taste.

What makes you proud about today’s teenagers?

It makes me proud how my generation is handling everything happening during this pandemic. We're making the best out of our High School experience during these times, and also are adapting very well to an entirely new way of learning.

What would you like to change about today’s teenagers?

I would change how dependent we all are on our phones and social media. It would be fun to live without a phone and not have to keep up with social media apps.

If you could live in any decade, which one would it be?

Hands down the 1950’s. The fashion and the music from the 50s has always had a very special place in my heart.

What’s next?

I hope to attend Seton Hall for Nursing next fall and be on their dance team.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years I see myself living in a cozy little apartment in Manhattan working as a nurse practitioner.

Will you come back to visit Center Stage, or are you gone for good when you’re out the door?

Of course I will have to come back and say Hi.
